What to Consider Before Enrolling in Basic Obedience Training for Your Dog

The commands your dog will be learning in our Basic Obedience Training program include: “sit”, “down”, “heel”, “come”, “climb” (which teaches them to climb into cards, grooming tables, etc.), and “place” (which teaches your dog to stay down a long time in a given place).

Once your canine has graduated from our Basic Obedience Training program, they must then move on to our Advanced Obedience Training in order to connect the commands they learned with the trainer to their respectful owner(s). All sessions will transpire in a house or a kennel.

     What We’ll Teach Your Dog

In our Basic Obedience Training program, your canine will always receive the individualized one-on-one training they deserve. The program involves 15 basic sessions all involving the introduction of your dog to various basic commands, and following those commands with the use of treats as reward.

Additionally, these sessions will get your dog to the point where they will begin to hold positions (without the use of the “stay” command): your dog will sit or remain in a lying position until we tell them they are free or simply give them another command. This will essentially teach your dog to hold positions automatically.

The Purpose of Basic Obedience Training for Your Dog

You can think of obedience training as the act of purposeful communication with your dog. It is a discipline, or a habit that should be practiced on a daily basis. More importantly, this training is a dialogue that continues between the dog and the owner for life.

While socialization as a puppy aids in domesticating your pet, dogs must learn to communicate with people in day-to-day life as well. This is where obedience training comes in. It is the cornerstone to successful, comprehensible, and regular communication with your dog. This method of canine education is built upon consistency, trust, and mutual respect.

Additional Benefits of Basic Obedience Training for Your Dog

A trained dog is a pleasure to be around. Any dog that listens to his/her owner and is respectful of others lives a fuller and freer life. The primary purpose of obedience training is to give the dog owner peace of mind that the dog will respond to them in a positive way. No matter the personality of your dog– whether it be shy, hyper, or ill-mannered– training helps to solve a vast array of behavioral problems. Obedience training is a solid foundation for other forms of training. From Frisbee dogs to service dogs, tracking dogs to herding dogs, it all starts with obedience.
